After a year without either event, the return of the Home Run Derby and the All-Star Game is thrilling enough. When you consider that this year’s Home Run Derby will be held in the thin air of Denver’s Coors Field, and that the field will include long-ball specialists like Shohei Ohtani, Joey Gallo, and Pete Alonso, it’s clear that tonight will be a lot of fun.
We asked ESPN MLB experts Alden Gonzalez, Buster Olney, Jeff Passan, Jesse Rogers, and David Schoenfield to predict everything from who will hit the longest home run of the entire derby to who will provide the moment we’re all talking about Monday night to which team will win the Midsummer Classic and which matchup they want to see the most.
Come back for live updates throughout the Home Run Derby and our greatest takeaways once a long ball king is proclaimed in Denver, and check out our predictions ahead of Monday night’s action.
On ESPN at 8 p.m. ET, watch the All-Star Home Run Derby.
Who will be the winner of the Home Run Derby?
Ohtani, Passan. Please accept my apologies.
Schoenfield: So you want me to take a chance on Ohtani? There’s no way.

Alonso, says Olney. Despite the fact that his relative was very anxious and failed to throw strikes, he triumphed in 2019. Now that he has bench coach Dave Jauss throwing to him, you could see him going on a run.
Gallo, Rogers. In his last 12 games in the first half, he hit 11 home runs. He’ll bring it with him to the derby.
Gonzalez: I’m going to choose Trevor Story, which is completely against the grain. He clearly understands the stadium well, and his home run average is actually higher than Ohtani’s. (On the basis of 21 fewer home runs.) He also spends half of his time at Coors Field. But, please, cooperate with me here.) It would just be a nice moment for a Colorado Rockies fan base that is currently grieving Nolan Arenado’s departure and will shortly do the same for Story.
Who will hit the night’s largest home run, and how far will it go?
Joey Gallo, 496 feet. Passan: Joey Gallo, 496 feet.
Schoenfield: While Ohtani has hit a few of tape-measure shots this season, I’m going with Gallo. In 2018, he blasted a career-long 495-foot home run, and he and Giancarlo Stanton have a combined 16 home runs of at least 450 feet since 2017. When you consider the altitude at Coors Field, I’m going with a 529-foot blast.
Ohtani, Olney. I’ll go with 586 feet for the moon shot, in honor of Frank Robinson, who hit that many home runs in his career.
Gonzalez: Without a doubt, this is Ohtani. Mike Trout thinks he may “leave the stadium,” which seems unlikely considering the length and height of the Coors Field dome in right field. But here is Ohtani at Coors Field, without the humidor, hitting baseballs that are likely to be tightly coiled. I’m going to go with 515 feet.
Rogers: Early in the competition, Ohtani will send one into the Rocky Mountains. It will go 509 feet.
What will be the one moment that everyone will remember long after the Home Run Derby is over?
Olney: Something Ohtani does, whether he wins or loses or destroys Coors Field’s top deck.
Ohtani is going to put on a show. Passan: Ohtani is going to put on a show for the ages. While the structure of the Derby may prevent him from winning the whole event, he will repeat what Vladimir Guerrero Jr. accomplished in 2019.

Schoenfield: In the second round, Ohtani defeats Alonso 23-22, featuring a streak of five consecutive 450-foot home runs that throws Coors Field into a frenzy.
Gonzalez: I believe Ohtani will be the headline here, but I also believe Gallo will get hot at some point and put together an amazing round. Gallo would not meet Ohtani until the championship game, and that would be a fantastic matchup.
Rogers: I concur with Jeff’s statement. Ohtani is going to go off and hit like 10 consecutive pitches out in the first inning. We may not see him in the finals, but that first round will be remembered.
Who will win the All-Star Game on Tuesday, and by what margin?
Schoenfield: The American League wins 11-10 as the batters go off, matching the 21 runs scored at Coors Field in the 1998 All-Star Game.
National League, 3-2. Passan: National League, 3-2.
Gonzalez: I concur with Dave. Let’s say the American League wins by a score of 13-8. More significantly, offense has risen in recent weeks, owing in part to Major League Baseball’s crackdown on foreign drugs, and this trend will continue in current climate.
Olney: The American League will extend its winning run to eight games; I’m going with a 7-3 score.
Rogers: The National League is loaded on the mound. They triumph 7-3.
Who do you think will win the All-Star Game MVP award?
Olney: Everyone will be searching for a reason for Ohtani to win the MVP award, which will give him an edge heading into the game — and, let’s face it, he’ll have more opportunities to do damage than anybody else, both on the mound and at the bat. Ohtani, according to the math.
Rafael Devers goes 3-for-3 with a home run, a double, and four RBIs for Schoenfield.

Home Run Derby, Monday, July 12th, 8 p.m. ET on ESPN
Fernando Tatis Jr., Passan: Fernando Tatis Jr., Passan: Fernando Tatis Jr.
Gonzalez: Guerrero leads the AL with three hits, two of which are for extra bases.
Nick Castellanos, Nick Castellanos, Nick Castellanos, Nick Castellanos, Nick Why? He’s the kind of player that aspires to be the MVP of the All-Star Game. That’s plenty for me.
Which All-Star Game matchup are you most looking forward to seeing?
Schoenfield: Well, it would have been Ohtani hitting against Jacob deGrom, but deGrom won’t be pitching, so whatever inning Ohtani pitches will be used. I’d love to see him face Tatis and throw a couple 100 mph fastballs early in the game when the NL starters are still in the game.
Tatis vs. Ohtani, according to Olney. I’m not sure what will happen, but it’ll be the swaggiest All-Star Game matchup ever.
Gonzalez: I’m eager to see Ohtani take against Tatis, since they’re probably two of the sport’s most dynamic and intriguing athletes. I’m also curious to watch how Ohtani reacts to the possibility of pitching in this game. He’d most likely do it in relief, something he isn’t used to, and he’d have to find time to warm up in between innings. It would be a great moment just to see him go out to the bullpen.
Rogers: With the game on the line, I’ll pick Aroldis Chapman vs. Tatis. Tatis is victorious in this fight.
