The team at Cloud Imperium Games has just announced a new update for their live game. They’ve been working hard to keep the dream alive, and this is one big step in that direction.
Star Citizen Live talks about planned updates to the game’s roster of internet spaceships. The goal is to have all the ships in the game available and playable by 2021.
While this year’s IAE is officially over, the Star Citizen team are still thinking about spacecraft. Last week’s Star Citizen Live was all about internet spaceships, with a number of CIG programmers on hand to discuss the best means of transportation in video games.
The broadcast mostly consists of player Q&A, however it was noted that not all questions could be addressed due to the fact that the developers brought on do not manage some elements of ship creation, such as concept art or bug repair. However, the video did mention some things that are still in the works, such as redesigning the 600i to include things like a medical bay and individual crew quarters, adding detachable bags to the Mole, making cargo weight change a ship’s characteristics, initial testing of strength-based damage rather than a hit point-based damage system, and talking about ship “gold standard,” which is a term for bringing old ships up to date with new game mechanics.
The video is after the break if you have an hour to waste listening to a bunch of blokes speak about internet spaceships.

Long-time MMORPG fans may recall that Star Citizen was initially Kickstarted in 2012 for nearly $2 million, with a 2014 release date scheduled. It is currently in an unfinished but playable alpha as of 2021, having collected about $400 million from players via years of ongoing crowdfunding and the selling of in-game ships and other assets. It is presently the most crowdfunded video game ever, and it has been met with unwavering support from fans and skepticism from detractors. Squadron 42, a co-developed single-player game, has also been frequently postponed.
