If you’ve been playing League of Legends for a while, you’ll know how important skillshots are. Even if you’re not regularly playing as a champion who uses skillshots in their repertoire, you’ll need to understand their mechanics to evade them on the battlefield. While getting to grips with skillshots is difficult, it’s by no means impossible. Need some pointers? We’ve put together a handy guide to help you on your way.
What Are Skillshots?
Skillshots is a fairly broad term that refers to any ability that involves a ground-targeted area of effect (AoE) ability or projectile. When deploying either of these abilities, you must consider travel time or delays. While champions like Lux and Ezreal are solid skillshot choices, other characters like Nami and Anivia are also worth considering.
How to Land Skillshots
If you’re struggling to land skillshots consistently, you must step back and think about a few different factors. For starters, you need to judge your accuracy. You’ll rarely be dealing with a static target, so predicting the movement and position of your opponent is crucial. Next, you need to consider your positioning.
Skillshots have different mechanics, including the speed and size of the hitbox. Both affect where you should be positioned if you want your attack to land as desired.
Only just started playing with a champion? Take some time to experiment with spells and apply them to various scenarios. Some champions have multiple skillshots, but they’re not equally effective. Use a stun-based one to daze your enemy, before unleashing a more devastating ability to put a dent in their HP.
Make Use of Your Surroundings
Map terrain is often used for defensive maneuvers. However, the map layout can also help you land more skillshots. Try and drive your opponent into areas of the map where they’ll be less able to dodge incoming attacks. Keep your enemy boxed in between you and the wall as you drive them toward the perfect spot for a skillshot.
How to Get Better at Dodging
Knowing how to land a skillshot is all well and good, but if your opponents have been doing their homework, you’ll also need to be able to dodge. The more you play, the better you’ll become at predicting your enemies’ behavior. Use the same logic applied to landing skillshot when you’re trying to avoid them. Are you being flanked by the enemy? Don’t let them crowd you against a wall. If you have been driven into a flanking situation, try and position yourself at an angle so you’re less exposed. Putting distance between yourself and an opponent should be a priority. If your surroundings allow, simply move in the opposite direction in a straight line. Map awareness is vital here. The last place you want to end up in is no man’s land.
