The triple-A or AAA game space is well-known for releasing titles at the highest possible price point – currently around $80 – but qualifying such prices with incredible graphics and many, many hours of top-notch gameplay. Grand Theft Auto 5 was one such game, but its sequel, GTA VI, is already being described as a AAAAA or quintuple-A game. Apparently, this is because of the sheer scope and scale of the product, bundled in with its cultural impact.
So, what is it that will help to make GTA VI jump up an extra couple of “As” to land as the first AAAAA game?
A Vast and Nostalgic Setting
Grand Theft Auto VI will see the series return to the fictitious Vice City, but with a vastly expanded map. The city that was at the centre of the 2002 entry to the series will bring back memories of neon-lit nightclubs, a colourful beachfront, and lots of action. Here, the Miami-inspired city is getting a makeover and more additions, while the map in its entirety will span the state of Leonida, which is based on Florida. It’s going to be huge.
Its impending impact can be seen coming from even this far out. Always looking to catch the hottest trend, slot game developers are already offering ways for fans to immerse themselves in the neon-lit city that inspires this colossus of an experience. It’s been a Very Long Time Coming
Sometimes, repeated release date delays and a lack of content information can lead to an abject state of apathy among fans and gamers. Yet, with Grand Theft Auto VI, the delays and lack of information has seemingly only increased the hunger for its release. At one point, GTA VI was locked in for a 2025 release, but in its place, the publisher declared a new and exact date of May 26, 2026. Apparently, this release date won’t change again now.
Given that GTA V was released in 2013 and became the most lucrative entertainment media product of all time, it’s actually a surprise that Rockstar didn’t get another out sooner. Of course, the continued revenue from the live service arm, GTA Online, allowed for this huge delay between entries. Even so, in terms of information, fans have only received a trailer in December 2023 and a second one in May of this year.
The return to Vice City’s iconic setting, the promise of a colossal sandbox to wreak havoc within, and even the release date delays have all played into this sense that an unstoppable force is about to hit. GTA VI being hyped so much isn’t a surprise: perhaps the biggest shock is that they didn’t add another “A” or two to their claims.
